LESSON 6: Understanding faith and obedience.
WHAT WE COVERED IN LESSON 5: The message of the New Testament.
Summary: God gave the New Testament to us so we may understand that he loves us
very much and what he desires of us. Within the New Testament we are told how
we are separated from God by our own sins, but that God has provided us a way
to be brought back to him by grace through Jesus' atoning sacrifice. The New
Testament also tells us how we come in contact with His grace and how to live
once we are in a right relationship with God.
WHAT WE WANT TO COVER IN LESSON 6:
What is faith?
Why should we have faith?
How do we receive faith?
Faith alone is not enough.
Are we justified (saved) by faith only?
How is faith and obedience demonstrated?
If we really have faith, then we will obey.
What if we don't obey?

WHAT IS FAITH?
Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of
what we do not see."
WHY SHOULD WE HAVE FAITH?
Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because
anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those
who earnestly seek him." (Read John 8:23-32)
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from
yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."
"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the
salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile."
"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my
Father in heaven."
HOW DO WE RECEIVE FAITH?
Romans 10:14-17 "How, then, can they call on the one they have not
believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they
preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of
those who bring good news!' But not all the Israelites accepted the good news.
For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our message?' Consequently, faith
comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of
John 20:30, 31
"Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which
are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in
FAITH ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
So faith begins by hearing about God and Jesus Christ (through the Word) and
believing certain things about them. However, a faith that saves you is a faith
that goes beyond just hearing and believing. You must have a faith that trusts
and obeys God. Even the Demons fear and believe in God. Faith Without Works Is
"You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was
not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered
his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working
together, and his faith was made complete by what he did." Verse 26 "As the
body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."
ARE WE JUSTIFIED (SAVED) BY FAITH ALONE?
Some in the religious world teach that faith is all that is necessary to be
saved. That all one must do is to sign their name to a short statement in a
book or repeat a short statement. They teach that all one must do in order to
be "saved" is to believe and have faith. What about obedience to God's word?
Read Hebrews 11:1-38.
"You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone."
HOW IS FAITH AND OBEDIENCE DEMONSTRATED?
John 14:15 "If you love me you will obey what I command."
"Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me."
John 14:23, 24
"Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will
love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not
love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they
belong to the Father who sent me."
"Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call
people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith."
(Obedience comes from faith).
IF WE REALLY HAVE FAITH THEN WE WILL OBEY.
Romans 6:16 "Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to
obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey - whether you are
slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to
righteousness?" (Obeying leads to righteousness, having faith alone is not
2 Corinthians 2:9
"The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient
"By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his
inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."
WHAT IF WE DON'T OBEY?
2 Thessalonians 1:8-10 "He will punish those who do not know God and do
not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting
destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of
his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be
marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you
believed our testimony to you."
